Research Brief: Transitions to Kindergarten and Beyond

The transition into kindergarten is one of the most significant milestones in a child's educational journey, but successful transitions do not end at kindergarten entry. Children continue to navigate important transitions as they move through the early elementary grades, making continuity across the preschool through Grade 3 (PK–3) continuum essential for long-term learning and success.

This State of the Field Research Brief synthesizes current research on the practices, policies, and conditions that support children and families as they move into kindergarten and through the early elementary grades. Taking a PK–3 perspective, the brief examines transitions as an ongoing process rather than a single event, highlighting the relationships, communication, alignment, and coordinated supports that help create continuity across children's early learning experiences.

Designed for state and local education leaders, practitioners, and parents and families, the brief offers research-informed insights and considerations for strengthening policy, practice, and systems to support successful transitions and sustained learning across the PK–3 continuum.
