Practice Brief: Early Math Instruction

Children develop mathematical ideas through everyday experiences, problem solving, play, and interactions with others. Effective early math instruction builds on this thinking to deepen mathematical understanding across the preschool through Grade 3 (PK–3) continuum.

This State of the Field Practice Brief translates research into practical guidance for centering children’s mathematical thinking in everyday practice. It highlights strategies for noticing, eliciting, and building on children’s mathematical ideas to inform instruction and extend learning.

Designed for state and local education leaders, educators, and parents and families, the brief offers practical strategies, examples, and considerations for strengthening early math instruction and supporting meaningful mathematics learning across PK–3.
