Practice Brief: Pedagogy of Early Learning

Play is not separate from learning—it is one of the primary ways young children learn, develop, and make sense of the world around them. Yet across many preschool through Grade 3 (PK–3) settings, play has been increasingly replaced by more teacher-directed instruction despite strong evidence of its importance for learning and development.

This State of the Field Practice Brief translates research on play-based learning into practical guidance for PK–3 leaders, educators, and parents and families. It highlights how intentional play-based approaches can support children's cognitive, language, social, emotional, and academic development while advancing meaningful learning goals.

Designed for those shaping children's learning experiences across PK–3, the brief offers evidence-based strategies, implementation considerations, and actionable recommendations for creating engaging, developmentally informed learning environments. It demonstrates how play-based learning can strengthen instruction, support academic growth, and expand access to joyful, intellectually rich learning experiences for all children.
