Bright Spot Brief: Transitions to Kindergarten and Beyond

Across the country, states, districts, schools, and early learning programs are strengthening kindergarten transitions by creating greater continuity across the preschool through Grade 3 (PK–3) continuum. These efforts demonstrate how coordinated transition practices can support children's learning, foster family partnerships, and strengthen instructional alignment.

This State of the Field Bright Spot Brief highlights promising approaches from South Carolina, Portland Public Schools, and Boston Public Schools that illustrate how communities are translating research into practice through coordinated systems, meaningful parent and family partnerships, and aligned learning experiences across the early grades.

Designed for state and local education leaders, educators, and school and program staff, the brief shares practical examples, lessons learned, and considerations for strengthening transition practices and supporting children and families across the PK–3 continuum.
